So, now you have created a blog and will start to write your very first blog post soon. However, you have no idea how to write a good blog post – the one that will attract hundreds, if not thousands of readers per day and generate a revenue from it.
Well, it depends on what type of content you’re writing and even the niche of your blog, actually. A travel blogger will have a totally different way of writing their blog post from a bitcoin blogger, for example. Some needs a long-form content to thrive, while some needs it short and straight-to-the-point.
Of course, there are some points that bloggers should follow as a basic guideline. Thus, a good blog post should:
- inform your readers what you’re going to write, so they don’t have to guess around
- have your personality & your tone of voice, which make you different from the others
- share valuable content and information that help your readers either solve their problems or entertain
- help connect you and your readers
That being said, there’s no right or wrong way how to write a good blog post. But hopefully some tips here can help.
How to Write a Good Blog Post
How-to #1: Know your audience
The very first step before you even start writing is to know who you’re writing for. Are you writing for male or female? Are they single or married, or do they have kids? What is their interest, concern, and fear (this is also called customer insight in the world of marketing, fyi).
The best tool to figure out who they are is Google Analytics, if you already have a decent amount of readers for Google to collect their information. If not, research before you write.
How-to #2: Have a clear & engaging title
What is the first thing your readers will read from your blog post, if not the title?
Having a clear title will help them understand immediately what you’re talking about, and since it’s also engaging, they will decide to click and read.
In some cases, your title should just be clear, for example a how-to guide or some less fancy topic. However, the rule of thumb is to keep it as clear and straight forward as possible.
No misunderstanding, no misleading or anything.
How-to #3: Have your “why”
Why is your article important? Why do the readers have to read it?
The key is that you have to trigger their interest in the topic, thus keep reading through your writing.
How-to #4: Use headers
Headers (H2, H3, H4, etc.) will not only make your article look clear neat, but also help with SEO benefits.
Sometimes, I just don’t have time to read through a whole long-form article but rather skim headers and see if I want to read it carefully later.
Therefore, use headers wisely and strategically to boost readers’ engagement!
How-to #5: Show your personality
One of the awesome things about blogging is that it helps to bring out your personality, thus build a deeper connection and level of trust with your audience.
Showing your personality could include sharing behind-the-scenes stories, telling personal stories (but of course, not too personal), using humour and your way of talking into your writing for for example.
It could also be design elements like the layout, fonts and colours of your blog – things that implicitly say who you are.
How-to #6: Proofread carefully
Even though one is a blogger, it doesn’t mean that one is a natural writer or grammar expert, and that’s totally OK.
However, a good blog post is the one that was written and proofread carefully, so that the readers can feel the write is serious.
Also, since you communicate with people through your writing, it’s your “face” online, your first impression with the world. Therefore, make it as much flawless as possible.
